Common Wedding Video Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

If you want to hear your vows, relive your dad’s toast, or cry happy tears watching your first look—wedding videography is a must. But it’s also a different beast than photography, with its own unique pitfalls.

Here’s what couples often get wrong—and how to make sure your film tells the story you want to remember.

Mistake #1: Booking Too Late

Why it matters: Good videographers book just as far out as photographers—sometimes even faster.

How to avoid it: Inquire early! Don’t treat videography as a last-minute add-on. In Chattanooga and Nashville, I often book 8–12 months in advance.

Mistake #2: Not Prioritizing Audio

Why it matters: Your vows, toasts, and reactions are what bring your film to life—and bad audio ruins that.

How to avoid it: Hire a videographer who uses professional lapel mics, external recorders, and backups. And avoid venues or DJs who block access to sound feeds.

Mistake #3: Not Coordinating With the Photographer

Why it matters: If your photo and video teams don’t work well together, it can create tension—or missed moments.

How to avoid it: Choose a photographer and videographer who have worked together—or book a combined photo + video team that’s already synced.

Mistake #4: Forgetting About Lighting & Setup

Why it matters: Video requires light and space. A super-dark venue or cramped getting-ready room can limit what your videographer can capture.

How to avoid it: Ask for tips on lighting-friendly spaces, and allow a few minutes in the timeline for detail shots, setup, and audio testing.

Mistake #5: Include Rehearsal Dinner Coverage

Why it matters: Rehearsal dinners are often where the most personal, emotional, and unscripted moments happen—especially from people who won’t be speaking at the ceremony. Parents, siblings, and lifelong friends often share heartfelt stories that don’t make it into the wedding day timeline. Without coverage, those memories are lost.

How to avoid it: Talk to your videographer about adding rehearsal dinner coverage, even if it’s just for a few hours. It’s one of the most valuable add-ons for couples who care about storytelling and want a deeper, more complete wedding film.Want a Film That Tells Your Full Story?
