Do You Need a Second Photographer? Pros & Cons

One of the biggest decisions couples face when booking a wedding photographer is whether or not to hire a second shooter. Is it worth the extra cost? Or can one photographer handle it all?

As a Chattanooga-based wedding photographer and videographer, I’ve worked weddings both solo and with second shooters—and I’m here to share the real pros and cons so you can decide what’s right for your day.

✅ Pros of Having a Second Photographer

1. More Coverage & Angles

One photographer can’t physically be in two places at once. A second shooter helps capture:

  • Both partners getting ready at different locations

  • Ceremony reactions from multiple angles

  • Candid guest moments while I’m focused on you

2. Better Candid Moments

While I’m working on portraits, a second shooter can roam cocktail hour or grab shots of your guests mingling. This adds depth and storytelling to your gallery.

3. Extra Security

Having two photographers means backup if:

  • A camera has an issue

  • Someone needs to step away for a moment

  • A shot gets missed during a fast-moving moment

4. Bigger Weddings Benefit Most

If you’re planning:

  • A large guest list (150+)

  • A big venue with multiple spaces

  • A tight timeline with events happening simultaneously

…a second shooter helps ensure nothing is missed.

❌ Cons of Having a Second Photographer

1. Extra Cost

Adding a second shooter means higher package costs. For intimate weddings or elopements, you might decide it’s unnecessary.

2. A Slightly Bigger “Footprint”

A second photographer adds one more person moving around. I keep my team discreet, but some couples prefer as few cameras as possible.

3. Not Always Necessary for Small Weddings

If you’re planning:

  • A micro-wedding

  • An elopement

  • A simple courthouse ceremony

…one photographer may be plenty.

So…Do You Need a Second Photographer?

If you’re getting married in Chattanooga—or anywhere—and want full coverage, multiple angles, and peace of mind, a second photographer is often worth it. For smaller weddings, one photographer can still beautifully document your day.
